Gays were definitely real victims, though.
True, but I doubt there were anywhere near as many homosexuals in Europe as Jews, gypsies, or Poles.
For openly gay people, you'd be right, tho if you included those in the vast closet of that era, there certainly were more than there were Jews or Roma and there numbers would have been of the same order of magnitude as the Poles, tho whether they were more or less than the Poles probably depends on whether you count none, some, or all of the Soviet Union and Turkey as part of Europe.
However, all this talk of absolute numbers is ridiculous. Relative impact is far more important. The only reason less Roma perished than did Jews is that the Nazis had considerably more Jews to murder than they did Roma.
Right on target.
What is haunting about this and what is often missed is that in fact for gays, no really cared what they had been subject to under the Nazi’s. The ‘treatment’ they received under the Nazi’s didn’t stop. It continued unabated for several decades and was in many cases, worse than death. This included electroshock therapy, aversion therapy, hormonal treatment and other forms of psychological torture. At Atascadero State Hospital in California for example, gays who had been busted by the police or shipped out there by their families or sectioned there were subject to forced castration and lobotomies. It is estimated that about 1,000 gays in that hospital alone were lobotomised by just one doctor (Dr Freeman)
I personally know gays of an older generation who went through similar treatments when they were young.
No one cared about them in Dachau and no one cared about them in California. While ultimately discredited similar treatments that are nothing more than psychological torture are still carried out on men and women often under the guise of being an expression of ‘religious freedom.’
