Question: If O'Malley's the nominee, who should he pick as his VP?
#1
The safest unknown white bread Democrat from a unimportant state, brings nothing, no fundrasing jolt, but a charisma drain like O'Malley, but will be reassuring to voters

#2
A female or minority running mate

#3
Sherrod Brown

#4
Brian Schweitzer

#5
Cory Booker

#6
Evan Bayh

#7
Gary Locke

#8
Jack Markell

#9
It does not matter because if O'Malley is nominated, O'Malley will be compared to Dukakis and Kerry anyway

#10
His VP choice will still be unknown, forgettable by November 8, 2016, it doesn't matter

If he is surprisingly nominated, what does Martin O'Malley need in a vice presidential choice?
  • Does he need a carbon-copy white bread Democrat who is so safe that he'll be forgettable like O'Malley and deliver no fundraising jolt and a state
  • A female or minority running mate to energize his lackluster campaign?

Kirsten Gillibrand, Sherrod Brown, or Gary Locke would be my top three here.

He definitely needs a female or minority, and a well-qualified one at that (no tokens like Ferraro and Palin). Especially considering how generic O'Malley himself is.

But she can't have too much personality or she'll upstage O'Malley and unbalance the ticket. That's the Edwards/Palin type and they're not worth the trouble.

So probably something in-between?

Considering he was a mayor and is currently a Governor of a blue state, he should be looking for an experienced female Senator from a swing-state or battleground state outside the North-east, who is preferably on the Foreign Relations or Armed Service Committee.

So, by those criteria, I would consider:
  • Kirsten Gillibrand
  • Kay Hagan
  • Amy Klobuchar
  • Claire McCaskill
  • Jeanne Shaheen

I'd put my money on Gillibrand.

Any of these VP choices would be a stronger candidate than O'Malley himself.

Maybe he should pick this guy then:

O'Malley's best pick would be someone who represents a milestone, wouldn't embarrass him on a national campaign, could help him govern and provides some geographic diversity.

Amy Klobuchar fits the bill the best. She's qualified on paper, and would be the first woman elected to national office. As a sitting Senator, she would help O'Malley with Congress and is unlikely to make any serious gaffes. And she would be a good surrogate in the Midwest.

I think Klobuchar or Gillibrand would be good, but I'm leaning to Klobuchar. I'm not sure O'Malley would play well in the Midwest, which Klobuchar could help with.

Too charismatic, he'll outshine O'Malley every time they appear together.

O'Malley doesn't have a VP choice -  he is the VP choice.

I think O'Malley may pick a white male or a Hispanic running mate. But I don't think the running mate will change the presidential race.

Cory Booker would be a good choice for him. He's more energizing than O'Malley.
