Has anyone in your family ever served in government in an elected or appointed capacity?

Within the past three generations, my family (on my father's side) has included a state legislator, city councilman and county tax assessor.  All Democrats of course.

Yes, all on my dad's side.  I am related to NY congressmen John T. Bergen and Teunis G. Bergen.  My uncle's ex-wife is the daughter of former Rockville, CT mayor Leo B. Flaherty, Jr.  Finally, I am a distant cousin of Governor Howard Dean.

None. My grandmother once ran for the school board of Davenport, Iowa, but was labeled a "one worlder" or something, and bit the dust. So I might be the first, depending on how Hudson goes - labeled yesterday by one councilman (a lawyer by the way, who does not mince words) as the stupid town, with a stupid council.

My Grandfather was a member of the Iranian Parliament for Tehran until latest 1977 (his death). Another relative was a diplomat until he suffered a horrible death but I'm not entirely sure if any others served in public office. I should find out.

My 2nd cousin ran for provincial office in a Liberal safe seat last year. Obviously he was unsuccessful.

I'm related by marriage to a former, very nearly successful Republican candidate for State Auditor.

This guy was something like my half-second-cousin-twice-removed; I'm also related to his son, obviously.  My great-great-grandpa was a village councilman as of the 1930 census; he was obsessed with politics enough to give his son (b. 1893) the middle name "Cleveland".  A great-great-uncle on my mom's side was listed as a (the?) county recorder for St. Joseph County, Indiana in the 1940 census.  It is likely I am related to most every president somehow or another through my dad's colonial ancestry at about the tenth cousin level or so.

A great-uncle was some kind of government minister in the late '80s or early '90s, I think. Another one was head of the intelligence service at some point, maybe? I vaguely remember the things my parents tell me.

Well, my grandfather ran for the Chamber of Deputies in 1965 and got defeated by a few hundred votes (in a year in which his party got almost destroyed by Frei and the Christian Democrats), and he was a national councilior for his party for almost two decades, so I'd say yes.

My grandfather ran for Braxton County sheriff sometime between the 1970s and 1990s. My Uncle (who was born around '87) mentioned having a bumper sticker, but I don't know if he was alive or not at the time.

My grandfather's served in the Georgia House since 2005. He was actually the first black Republican elected since reconstruction (not something I'm particularly proud of). He's being primaried by a fat white guy from the Tea Party who wants to governor like Jesus, Heath Clark.

This guy is a great-great-uncle.

Only served one term in Congress (1963-1965), but was there to vote for the Civil Rights Act of 1964. FF.

I'm a 4th cousin numerous times removed with Charles Sumner, but that's about it.

John Winthrop's a blood relative of mine too. I wanna say tenth or eleventh great grandfather (something insane like that).

Crazy to think if New England was a kingdom then I'd probably be on the cover of the National Inquirer or something. My Masshole credentials are pretty damn amazing.

So yeah, that leaves me with John Kerry, Schuyler Colfax, Mike Leavitt, Herbert Hoover, David Souter, and Oliver Wendell Holmes.

We're not mind readers, Vosem. One of your grandparents could have been in the Politburo or the Communist Party Central Committee or something.

My father's uncle was once the mayor of the humble town of Santa Catarina Mita, Jutiapa, Guatemala. This was in the 80s. However, he doesn't know sh*t about politics and was solely elected based on popularity. Apart from that, I'm probably distantly related to many other local politicians in Guatemala.

Dad's the treasurer of the HOA, his brother was elected to the municipal fire board after finding out the position was unopposed.
