The other day my step-mother told me that her uncle was our state's under-treasurer (highest ranking public official in the state treasury and advisor to the Treasurer) and that her cousin is a high-ranking official in the public transport authority. But those are both unelected, non-partisan bureaucratic positions.

Nope, at least not for my immediate family. Though I do have some extremely distant relatives who, IIRC, where in the VA and KY state legislatures. Not that I take much pride in them since they were all rich planter types and thusly slaveholders.

I'm apparently vaguely related to Chester Alan Arthur somehow.

My grandfather on the mother's side was in the 80ies for a year or so the major of our village, as well as in the village council for quite a time. My uncle (his son) was vice-major and also in the council. My dad was in the council until I think two years ago.
I don't know if you can call that politicians, though.

My great great uncle was the reeve of the now amalgamated (into North Bay) Township of West Ferris, Ontario. Tongue

Oh, I'm also distantly related to several US Presidents.

My aunt's brother-in-law was elected mayor of a city in Ethiopia, but was promptly jailed for it.

We're Soviet Jews. Of course not.

We're not mind readers, Vosem. One of your grandparents could have been in the Politburo or the Communist Party Central Committee or something.

Well, that's not the case Tongue

A distant Cousin of mine is supposedly high up in the Communist party if that counts.

James Clark, State Senator and President of the Maryland Senate in the late 70’s/early 80’s was my grandmother’s cousin.  Not sure what that makes him (2nd, 3rd cousin?) in relation to me.

First cousin, twice removed.

My grandmother was a Challam County Commissioner. She was defeated for re-election when she tried to pass an ordinance that would ban billboards, much to the ire of certain local businesses.

My family was never interested in politics much, but I guess it depends on what you consider a politician.  I think my grandma's half-brother may have been mayor of Onaway, Michigan, but I know my mother worked on the Dukakis campaign in 1988.  My aunt was student body president at the university I currently attend and was their first to be reelected.  She got to know Governors Blanchard and Engler (here in Michigan) pretty well.  She didn't like Engler much because of his lack of response to tuition concerns, but she's a liberal anyway, so it doesn't really surprise me.

My grandma also thinks that we're related to Mike Pence.

I've mentioned it some in my threads, but I have an uncle and good family friend serving in the LA Legislature. One of my cousins is a judge in Jefferson Parish and I'm distantly related to Blanche Lincoln.

Yes, but not important/relevant ones.

This.

My cousin is a first alternate for the Social Liberals in Frederiksberg City Council in Copenhagen and his American born dad is a Labour councillor in some obscure London suburb I cant remember.
A distant relative was the leader of the Danish Conservative youth movement in 1912-1916 and controlled 4 organizations before being couped after accusations of being gay. He was elected as an MP in 1918, but died immediately after from the Spanish Flu.

Mummy's been a two-term deputy mayor of a 50,000 suburb of Paris, who lost reelection last March.

I have myself twice been a candidate for FG in elections, but always very distant and hopeless candidate so that doesn't make me even close to a politician.

Yeah, my mother's family claims to be the family with the most Conservative MPs in Swedish history. We haven't had one in the last decade though, sadly enough.

My dad was on the team that wrote the party platform of the social democrats back in the 70s.

Well, yes, but you abdicated and then we had to replace you with drj101. That was a weird time.
