I'm trying to put the European Parliament in context but it's confusing even after reading the Wikipedia entries (no legislative initiative, its power relative to all the Commissions/Councils, etc).

Is it wrong to view this election as basically an EU-equivalent of a House of Representatives election here in the U.S.?

UKIP carried both N Lincs and NE Lincs, Rotherham, Doncaster, Wakefield, Calderdale, York, the East Riding unitary, Hull, Selby and Scarborough & Whitby.  Some of these (Donny, York, Calderdale) were close, others (especially the two Lincs districts) were not.

Labour carried Sheffield, Barnsley (just), Kirklees, Leeds and Bradford.  Bradford was the one place which seemed noticeably good for Labour.

The Tories carried Craven, Harrogate, Hambleton, Richmondshire and Ryedale.

Compared with the local elections on the same day, Labour were down 2.9 percentage points, UKIP up 4.7, the Greens down 0.2, the Tories up 3.7 and the Lib Dems down 7.6.  No2EU got less than a fifth of TUSC's local election vote.

Nice results. UKIP topping the poll, the Tories not doing too badly, the Lib Dems getting kicked in (though that expected by now) and the Greens actually going backwards (vote wise). Of course, these results don't really mean much, but nevermind that. First time a party other than the Conservatives or Labour has topped the poll in a nationwide election since 1910! If you'll pardon my use of cliche, that's got to be one for the history books.

Now, off to see if Dan Hodges has tried to claim that this is actually a disaster for UKIP and Labour, with the real winners of this election being the Lib Dems.

Voting for a joke party is the most stupid thing anyone can do.

Voting for Die PARTEI effectively reduced the chance of the NPD winning a second seat.

In any case, PARTEI leader Martin Sonneborn has announced that the'yre going to keep their campaign promise of resigning their seat every 30 days, so that any of the 60 PARTEI candidates on their list gets a chance to serve for a month in the European Parliament. Sonneborn said he's gonna use his 30 days to prepare himself for his impending resignation.

Well at least we came second. It was no surprise that UKIP was going to win this, but it's worth pointing out that they got less than what might have been expected and nearly three-quarters of voters went for a party that doesn't want an immediate referendum.

It made a difference. Be smarter than the other kids ! Every vote does make a difference even if the winning margin is not one vote in the end. This cliché is annoying. I guess it's an American thing.
