We've seen many DC politicos such as United States Senators get bored and return to their respective home states and win the governorship of those states, so here's a list of a couple who've done that in no particular order:

1.) Price Daniel  (D): (of my homestate of Texas): left the Senate in 1957 to become Texas' 38th Governor on January 15, 1957-having been elected in 1956 and was re-elected in 1958 and 1960.

2.) Sam Houston (D) of Texas: left the Senate after 13 years in late 1859 to become Texas' 7th Governor, serving until March 9, 1861.

3.) Sam Brownback (R): Kansas' 46th Governor since January 10, 2011.

4.) Lincoln Chafee (R/Ind/Dem): Rhode Island's 74th Governor since January 4, 2011.

5.) Pete Wilson (R): California's 36th Governor from January 7, 1991-January 4, 1999.

6.) Lowell Weicker (R/Ind): Connecticut's 85th Governor from January 9, 1991-January 4, 1995: did not seek reelection in 1994.

7.) Lawton Chiles (D): Florida's 41st Governor from January 8, 1991-December 12, 1998: died in office.

8.) Henry Bellmon (R): Oklahoma's 23rd Governor (second term) January 12, 1987-January 14, 1991: previously served as OK's 18th Governor from January 14, 1963-January 9, 1967 and later served in the U.S. Senate from 1969-1981.

9.) Mark Dayton (D): Minnesota's 46th Governor since January 3, 2011.

10.) Edwin Carl Johnson (D): Colorado's 34th Governor (2nd time) from January 11, 1955-January 8, 1957: previously served as CO's 26th Governor from January 10, 1933-January 1, 1937 and later served in the U.S. Senate from 1937-1955.

11.) Ernest McFarland (D): Arizona's 10th Governor from January 3, 1955-January 5, 1959: did not seek reelection to 3rd term in 1958 for unsuccessful bid for the U.S. Senate.

12.) Jon Corzine (D): New Jersey's 54th Governor from January 17, 2006-January 19, 2010: defeated for reelection in 2009.

13.) Arthur Harry Moore (D): New Jersey's 39th Governor from January 18, 1938-January 21, 1941 (3rd time): previously served in the governorship from January 19, 1926-January 15, 1929 and again from January 19, 1932-January 3, 1935 and served in the U.S. Senate from 1935 until his election as governor.

14.) Walter Evans Edge (R): New Jersey's 36th Governor from January 18, 1944-January 21, 1947: previously served as governor from January 15, 1917-May 16, 1919 and in the U.S. Senate from 1919-1929.

Anyone else I left out ?

Totally forgot about Dirk Kempthorne (R): 30th Governor of Idaho from January 8, 1999 to May 26, 2006: resigned during his 2nd term to become Bush 43's Interior Secretary. Had served in the U.S. Senate from 1993 to 1999.

That makes him the 15th.

Any others ?

Murkowski's the 16th: Alaska's 8th Governor from December 2, 2002 to December 4, 2006: got punked by Palin in the 2006 GOP gubernatorial primary.

Once Vitter wins in Louisiana next year, he'll be the 17th.

George Voinovich, who was a popular governor for two terms in OH.  He defeated Democrat Mary Boyle in '98 for a GOP pickup and easily won re-election in 2004.

Mark Dayton didn't leave the Senate to become Governor. He didn't run for re-election in 2006 and took office as Governor on January 3, 2011.

I forgot to add that detail on Dayton.

Next article I'll do is House members leaving for the governorship next week.

I think Mary Taylor has her eye on the Governorship as well DeWine may want it but won't get a free ride.

It's really a shame we can't add Kay Bailey Hutchison to this list. Sad

Well, considering who won the Texas Gubernational elections, I totally agree with you.

Although seriously, his presidential bid was definitely A-W-E-S-O-M-E, many laughs Cheesy

KBH's chance was in 2006 when she could've beaten Perry that year, but didn't take the plunge.

He may try, but he'd be 72 at the inauguration. That puts him at 80 after 2 terms. Pretty old, but it's not unheard of. Jerry Brown's doing it right now. DeWine probably would have been better off if Kasich had lost in 2010, setting him up for a run this year.

Does Mike DeWine creep anyone else out?

^ She ran in 1995 and that may be a real option if she loses this year.

Also:

Once If Vitter wins in Louisiana next year, he'll be the 17th.

See, I assumed Mitch was the one who'd go for Governor, and that Mary wouldn't do anything else in politics (in the event she loses).

Why do you keep showing up in the middle of threads and demonstrate that you haven't bothered to read any of the intervening posts between the OP and whatever you think you're contributing?  He was reminded about Frank Murkowski in Reply #4.

We're about to find out if Mary Landrieu has one more juice in the dynasty arm left to pull off a victory.
