According to en.wikipedia, the world's most populous state has 1 minister responsible for Finance AND Defense!

This is is pretty standard in India.  When a new regime comes into power, they tend to start with a small number of ministers who sometimes hold more than one ministry.   Then sometime after that and with some internal talks the cabinet is expanded to the right size.

Look at the AIADMK website

http://aiadmk.com/

Notice how every section has a picture of Jayalalithaa and every picture of a person is Jayalalithaa.

Very nice.

It is harder to know with Indian maps whether parties would be strong or weak if they contested in certain areas. I'm sure the rest of Maharashtra would be better for BJP than Kerala, for example. It does rather seem to radiate from Ahmedabad...

Baroda at #2 of course had a notable role in Indian political history back during the Emergency.

Note that some member parties are... not exactly... all that close to the BJP in official ideological terms. Not that seasoned observers of Indian politics will need that pointed out, admittedly.

Similar caveats to the NDA map, obviously.
