The point of this bill is to bring the essential elements of our economic foundation under public ownership. This bill will allow for the backbone of the economy to remain on a stable footing.

I am open to amendments to that affect, Adam and Alfred.

I would prefer to see the backbone of our economy able to stretch and roam free, to develop alternative and diverse energy resources and technologies, not loaded down by bureaucracy and stuck in a monopolistic morass.

Of course the energy sector is already monopolized and steered by a private sector bureaucracy that erects barriers to entry and keeps out alternative energies (which is why we've had to essentially legislate them into existence), but don't let that get in the way of your self-righteous "muh markets" nonsense.

Not really. Most nations have some degree of nationalization, and I frankly am sick and tired of ours being behind the curve on making industry run in the public interest, rather than on the qualms of private sector parasites.

I still don't think I've heard what problem this bill is supposed to solve.

Parasites controlling major industry.

I don't see how this bill would change that.

No, I want to know about problems that actually make a difference in people's lives.

Nationalizing electricity will mean we'll be able to expand service in under served areas and lower rates, for one.

The answer is not to surrender to gov't monolies but to organize non-profit alternatives to compete with the for profit actors and thus bring their behavior into line or maybe put them out of business.

A non-profit monopoly and a government monopoly can be one in the same, provided this is structured correctly.

Here is something I thought up earlier.

You create a Public Corporation (like Amtrak or PBS whaterver those are called) and have it build new production facilities. It could then sell power to sub-regional power co-opts and transmit the power over the Smart Grid that we are building as I recall.

Power is power, the oil companies share pipelines, so why couldn't power companies share power lines. If you put so many kilowatts on the grid, you can then sell that many kilowatts at the other end.

Would this work?

I would actually be fine with this approach. My electricity is provided by a co-op that draws energy from the TVA, and I think it's a fine model, provided said co-ops are given a monopoly on energy distribution.

Can I object to a final vote? I was preparing an amendment...
