As if Broun wasn't far enough off the wall:

Weird... Maybe this congressional seat is jinxed.

Disagreeing with same-sex marriage and abortion is one matter (I oppose both, FWIW), but it is ridiculous to come up with blanket conspiracy theories against entire groups.

What did Bacon King refer to Broun as once when describing what South Georgians think of him? A Kooky Mountain-Man? It was probably last summer he said it.  NE Georgia seems to be an "interesting" place of so many "interesting" people. Wink

It's where the movie Deliverance took place, but that's all I'm gonna say. Wink

The saddest thing is that Athens is in this district...

I feel so bad for that city. Outside of a Dem gerrymander, they'll never get a sane Congressman.

I see Broun lives in Athens.

I think it is kind of hilarious how UGA students get represented by a ridiculously rightwing congressman, since I think the university is quite liberal.

They're the reason he won in the first place, IIRC

Well, Athens is pretty much screwed in political representation. Its a small blue dot surrounded by a sea of rural redness, there's no good way a district that has Athens to have a democrat congressperson without gerrymandering.

Obama won 52-48, it's pretty similar to John Barrow's old district.

I'll do you one better:

Here are three congressional districts, each of which do not overlap one another at all, except for Clarke County-Athens (shown in black). The entirety Dem/Rep Obama/McCain results of each district is shown below (includes Clarke-Athens portion). While none are blow-outs, that's not really the point: each of them could be competitive, majority-white districts with Athens.

This wonderful district just happens to be my residence. I can assure you that the stories you read of these crazies we send to Congress are not exaggerated...unfortunately.

Adam, those proposals are great! I jealously want to live in the proposed blue one, for obvious reasons.  Hey, a R+3 is better than the present R+14! Tongue
