I agree that Mitt Romney's 2012 campaign was somewhat similar to Thomas Dewey's campaign in 1948, but to be quite honest, he was the best possible candidate that the Republicans could have nominated (other than Jon Huntsman). If any of the other Republican candidates won the nomination, I feel that they would have ended up losing North Carolina, Arizona and possibly Georgia.
