I announced my endorsement of the DemPGH/windjammer ticket a couple weeks ago and I stand by that endorsement, and thus encourage my party to follow suit.  However, given that my reasons for supporting them are probably different from those of most Federalists, I will abstain from giving a speech.

So, are we trying to expand the platform by making it more detailed, or do we want to stick with tick-points?  I have some ideas, but I don't want to submit an entire paragraph on one issue if the majority of the platform is comprised of one-sentence policy stances.

I know next to nothing about it. TJ warned that use of the words "societal ills" following market solutions as potentially being an endorsement for using it in some rather weird places.

The reason I had brought up Freakonomics was that Freakonomics has a chapter defending abortion on an economic basis. That's the sort of interpretation I wanted to avoid.

After a somewhate lengthy discussion with Yankee, we decided to change the original writing of the proposed text, which said "societal issues" to "societal ills", the latter more clearly having a connotation toward poverty etc. rather than divisive social issues.

Dude, you didn't read the chapter close enough if you think he's defending abortion. He's showing you statistics and how they may or may not be correlated. There is a brief forward on the chapter saying the chapter is about interesting numbers and not the policy. You can call it "Amount of people buying purple crayons" for all they care.

Doesn't that book make frequent use of the "correlation = causation" fallacy, though?  I haven't read much about the book beyond reviews, but most of the reviews I've heard have been bad.

As different as my economic philosophy may be from most in the party, this is definitely not the kind of message we want to send working-class Atlasians.

I'm going to offer an amendment and see how much traction it gets.  It would've been longer, but I understand that some of us prefer a platform that's short and to the point, so I'm submitting something that keeps to that standard.

I guess I'll bite and ask what you have in mind as a starting point?

I've long been a proponent of regions establishing a housing program in the mold of Utah's anti-homelessness initiative that was started over a decade ago.  In summary, the state provides free apartment rooms to people who can't afford shelter and are often trapped in a nonstop pattern of entering and leaving hospitals for a number of reasons.  Those who are not mentally disabled are provided with a social worker that helps them find work, but clients get to keep their apartment until they're self-sustainable.  In my opinion, it's far more effective than food stamp programs or even the EITC (not that I want to get rid of either) because its services are actually tailored to people's individual needs.  Utah is on track to completely eradicate homelessness in its borders by the end of the decade because of it.

Socialist as it may sound, it's actually something that both Utah Democrats and Republicans support and it inevitably leads to less government dependence once people get a leg up.

But that, in a nutshell, is what my amendment endorses.

Anyway, I would argue that we should adopt the amendment because it's a tad more specific.  Party platforms that consist of more rhetoric than substance are a pet peeve to me.  But, the amendment I proposed isn't even that specific in and of itself.
