Well, I'll be writing in myself and then second-preferencing DemPGH. If anyone wants to join this sinking ship, you're more than welcome. Tongue

I would prefer something concise but specific.

Nay. Government redistribution is neither the only nor the most effective way to address income inequalities.

No, the best way is supporting unions, but that ain't gonna happen.

Wouldn't societal ills cover income inequalities, I mean from a redundancy/concission point of view?

That's why I supported it. I believe income inequality actually is a serious societal ill, but the proposed language will at least allow reconciliation with members of our party who maybe think otherwise.

I also supported it perhaps out of confusion: Are we voting on this as an amendment or as the final text? I assumed it was the final text and reasoned that it was "good enough" to vote aye and get this out of the way. I haven't been following along though, so it's possible I misunderstood?

I guess I'll bite and ask what you have in mind as a starting point?

I would prefer to replace the words "starting point" in your text to "hand up," if you're open to that.

Aye

And Scott, I think something along the lines of the Utah homelessness plan would be a good idea to implement, but I also think it might be too specific for a party platform. We haven't really done any other issue that sort of justice.

I agree, but one vague point about homelessness isn't that specific. I actually think it straddles the line well between giving specificity and flexibility in the platform. We just need to come up with more points like that on a range of issues and then group them into categories.

I'll fix the ing amendment tomorrow.  I can't even see and I'm going into a nervous breakdown.  I'm so sorry to ruin the convention.  I'm just letting you know I'm not done with the platform.r

You okay, Scott? Undecided

Cuz no one's angry here. I think it's a good idea to discuss items like this. It's what we need to be doing (and probably should've been doing 12 months ago).

Nay

We should be advocating more private ways to handle the issue of homeless rather than using the force of government. Don't get me wrong compassion to the poor is important but the role of government is to ensure liberty. There are folks who will think that this will intrude on their liberties.

If that was actually the role of government there would be no government. How do you have liberty if the social system that a "freedom-loving" government has helped nurture keeps people at the bottom? I don't believe that it's government's job to give everyone everything they will ever need, but offering a hand up elevates Atlasia as a whole.

Also, we are not currently voting on the homelessness plank.

Since the current vote will be over soon, I thought I'd introduce an amendment of my own. I actually don't agree with it myself, but I figure it's an important thing to talk about and most members probably would want something like this in the platform.

I can come up with more, but are we all okay with this one-at-a-time approach? I actually kind of like it. At the end we'll have a big mess of unrelated points, but the important thing is that we'll have solid material. Then someone can just sort things into headers and it'll be done.

I like that very much as a first point in a foreign policy section. Maybe after this vote we can get into specifics about some countries of interest (a commitment to Israel, for example).

Well, that's not exactly what happened, but Atlasians living abroad now have more recognition in the game and are allowed to register in provinces. I've always thought it was time to throw a bone to those folks. #NotBiasedOrAnything
