They are the Greatest Generation not only because they survived the worst depression in world history (which 'toughened them up' in preparation, so to speak), but also faced down Nazi Germany and militarist Japan, and set the stage for eventual victory over the Soviet Union and communism -even if it was decades in the making.

How? The Soviets were put on the slump to eventual stagnation once they adopted Stalinist economics and abandoned the NEP. I don't see how the American WWII generation affected their fall.

I meant by the passage of the Marshall Plan, the creation of NATO, and the overall adoption of containment (along with the nuclear deterrent) as a policy vis-a-vis the Soviet Union.

In terms of accomplishments, the "Greatest Generation" was indeed the greatest so far in American history by waging and winning in both the struggles against fascism and communism along with building an American welfare state that created the most equitable conditions in American history that has not been paralleled before or since and achieving legal equality of the races.

They were certainly a hell of a lot better than their children. I don't think there's a bigger distinction that can be drawn between two successive generations of Americans, which probably on a subconscious level why the term "Greatest Generation" has remained prevalent.

If you live in the United States and enjoy your freedom, thank a veteran.  They're the ones who fight for our freedom and our way of life.  Never forget that.

In general it's really silly to say that any one generation is "better" than another generation, let alone make a pissing contest out of it.  Not least because, how do you even define those generations in the first place?

However, the G.I.s did have the double whammy of having to grow up with the Depression and then fight the Nazis.  That's a tough challenge, and it deserves our kudos even today.
