First example that springs to mind because I've been researching him lately. A decent argument could be made that he doesn't qualify as a 'hard-leftie', but I'd disagree with it.

Generally a FF on politics, although he is admittedly further left than I.

FF. His contributions to lingustics and computer science go back to the 1950s. Although it's hilarious that there's one language (Pirahãa) that totally doesn't follow his language rules.

An intelligent person, although afflicted with an illness all sorts of academics get: they think being very good and respected at their own discipline means they are automatic experts at every discipline (see also: Dawkins, Richard)

The science of linguistics has never been a very appealing subject to me, so I can't comment on Chomsky's work in that regard, though it is interesting to see someone like him who's educated on such a multitude of disciplines.  That doesn't mean his convictions are right all the time, but if his contributions help to further their studies, I see no reason to condemn him.

He enages in a lot of True Leftist fallacies but he actually acts like he has a brain unlike your typical teenage communist and his linguistics work can't be understated and transcends politics. Even conservatives need to give him credit on that. FF.

FF, and I concur with most of his statements on political topics - if not in their precise wording at least in their underlying sentiments - although his advocacy for anarchism is somewhat too radical for my tastes.
