2040The nation is in shambles. Income inequality has risen to an unprecedented peak, making the Gilded Age of the 1870s and 1880s look tame by comparison. The crash of 2025 has plunged the nation into an economic crises unlike any other, and has swept away the established political order of things in the process.
The Democratic and Republican parties, increasingly viewed as "two peas in a pod" by an ever radicalizing electorate, have lost most of their credibility. The Democrats had held the Presidency from 2009 to 2025 (first under President Obama, then under President Clinton) before losing it on the eve of the crash to Republican Rand Paul. Paul would then preside over a wrenching economic depression, throwing the GOP out in favor of the Democrats in 2028. Unable to solve the crisis, the Democrats would be turned out in 2032. The GOP, in power once more, would prove unable to solve the crisis, and would be thrown out of office by a military coup (backed by the IMF, WTO, and other financial interests) before the regularly scheduled elections of 2036. A caretaker administration was formed, a veritable cross-party coalition of neoliberal administrators, headed up by former IMF economist Simfan34. Promoting a "progressive conservatism", a general restructuring of the economy and a slimming down of an already slimmed down state sector, President Simfan34 has also shown fairly dictatorial tendencies while in office, regularly jailing "Social Justice Warrior" dissidents and "true leftists" opposed to the actions of the administration.
With the restoration of democracy coming in 2040, the Democrats and the Republicans alike have agreed to back Simfan, running as the candidate of the Restore America Now (RAN) coalition. The far-left, having just now been allowed to participate in elections once again, has formed an all-party coalition of smaller socialist sects, and in alliance with the AFL-CIO, has launched the Union of Socialist Parties. The USP is backing the election of porsche club member turned guerrilla socialist Snowstalker, Senator from Pennsylvania, for the Presidency.
On election day, the USP ticket (in red) utterly defeated the RAN ticket headed by President Simfan. Unfortunately for the USP, outgoing President Simfan would decide not to certify the results, and, working in conjunction with Secretary of Defense Cathcon, arrest and exile Snowstalker to Guantanamo Bay Prison, Cuba.
