1. John Kennedy/Lyndon Johnson

2. Richard Nixon/Gerald Ford

3. Gerald Ford/Jimmy Carter

4. Jimmy Carter/Bill Clinton

To my mind:

1. Johnson -> Kennedy
2. Ford -> Nixon
3. Ford -> Carter
4. Clinton -> Carter

Johnson was to the left of Kennedy, Ford was to the left of Nixon, Carter was overall probably to the left of Ford, and Clinton was to the right of Carter.

Johnson --> Kennedy

Nixon --> Ford

Ford --> Carter (though not enough to make any noticeable or perceptible difference)

Carter --> Clinton

I'm talking about in terms of personal viewpoints, rather than acts as President, honestly. Although even by that measure, Johnson is decidedly to the right of Kennedy, as the welfare programs he established are all fairly liberal (in the traditional sense of the term) in character, applying means-tested benefits as opposed to solidaristic, universal benefits, which the Kennedy administration seemed to be more comfortable with, at least given the job program it enacted in the early 1960s (I can't seem to remember the exact name of that legislation at the moment, unfortunately)

Negative, agnes. Carter deregulated airplanes/oil/beer and started phase II of the Cold War. He was Reagan before Reagan.

Carter 'started' that? More like the Russians did when they invaded Afghanistan.

Carter had been taking a much harsher stance towards the Soviets than Nixon or Ford well before they invaded Afghanistan. There was talk of cutting off American agricultural exports to Russia as early as 1977.

This left/right thing is a fake. It's a bourgeois instrument to make people think they actually have options in the current system.
