A more interesting question would be: What percentage of the black vote would Carson win in the general election?
I suspect that the answer to that question would be - above 30%.

Are you crazy ?

Carson would not get more than the average White Republican got.

Tim Scott for example did not get more than 10% in SC this year.

It is well known that a lot of black Republicans voted for Obama. I don't know the percentage, but I think it's close to 30%.
Why wouldn't the opposite be true?

Because there aren't a lot of black Republicans in existence. Republicans get, at most, around 10% of the Black vote. Obama's candidacy dropped that down to around 7% or so. Ironically, I think the best candidate to compete for black votes would be a white candidate, Rand Paul.

Maybe they would vote based on who was most qualified, rather than just based on race?

Obama 08, anyone ?

John Kerry won 89% of blacks in 2004.

Incidentally, Al Sharpton won no black counties in the 2004 Democratic primaries.

Sharpton came close to winning the two black CDs in Michigan.

Close to 30% percent of black republicans probably did vote for Obama. Let's say 10% of blacks vote republican usually. Obama got 93% of the black vote so probably he got close to a third of that small demographic.
However trying to get 30% of blacks overall (usually 90% democratic) to vote republican is a different story. Even black republicans generally stay under their 15% ceiling unless they are moderates like Steele. 30% I don't believe has been achieved by any republican in a major contested election this century except perhaps Joseph Cao but not because of race. If republicans want 30% of the black vote they would have to work with democrats to alleviate racial polarization and move to the centre but taking advantage of racial polarization to win more whites is much more effective in elections.

Let's see, assuming he gets Clarence Thomas, Alan Keyes, Tim Scott, J.C. Watts, Mia Love, Ayan Hirsi Ali, Thomas Sowell, and Herman Cain, and that crazy dude from Florida. Colin Powell and Condolezza Rice would probably go for Bush. So his max is 9 out of 11, or 82%
You forgot E.W. Jackson.  aka 'that crazy dude from Virginia'.
