Sort of an odd choice for 'worst', he was actually pretty tame compared to most Southern politicians at the time.

Grumps, I think Maxwell might be too new to know about the infamous Kyle Mercado of Bakersfield.

Though if this questioned had been about Atlasian politics, Mr Hamilton, who used to be the Francis Undrwood character of this forum, would probably win the contest by a landslide.

For me, Andrew Johnson stands out as the politician whose actions had the worst impact on the US. Joe McCarthy and George Wallace also stand tall as pillars of awfulness. Nixon has a much more complicated legacy, but I think he deserves a place at the table as well.

More recently, Mark Foley, Rod Blagojevich, Scooter Libby, and Jack Abramoff come to mind.

I'd also throw in the members of the Burr conspiracy and the Business Plot.

It looks like Dick Cheney is especially evil. I talked to his underlings at the fraternities in Laramie. They say he bought Johnnie Red for everyone and helped People get laid. Tongue I mean guy probably eats people but he will take very good care of you if you are of value to him.

Broadening my response, because everyone else seems to be:

Living: Hillary Clinton, Dick Cheney, Barack Obama, George W. Bush, Condi Rice, Donald Rumsfeld, Paul Wolfowitz, Alberto Gonzales, John Yoo, Michelle Rhee, Adrian Fenty, Rahm Emanuel, Rudy Giuliani, Eric Holder, Dick Armey, Peter King, Bill Kristol, Lindsey Graham, Joe Lieberman, Dianne Feinstein, David Frum, Bill Clinton, George H.W. Bush, Scott Walker, Rick Snyder, John Kasich, Mitch Daniels, the Koch Brothers, Peggy Noonan, Rick Scott, Jimmy Carter

Dead: Ronald Reagan, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, Joseph McCarthy, Robert Taft, Fred Hartley, Robert Kennedy, J. Edgar Hoover, James Forrestal, Robert McNamara, McGeorge Bundy, Ted Kennedy (I mean, he did kill a woman), Herbert Hoover, Warren Harding, Woodrow Wilson, A. Mitchell Palmer, Theodore Roosevelt, the Rockefeller family (living and dead), Grover Cleveland, Rutherford Hayes, Benjamin Tillman, Theodore Bilbo, Fernando Wood (literally the Ron Paul of the 19th Century, but without any of the few redeeming positions he has), John Calhoun, James Buchanan, Franklin Pierce, John Breckinridge, John Tyler, Jefferson Davis, Alexander Stephens, James Madison (thanks for this lousy Constitution, asshole), John Adams, the Federalist Party, the American/Know-Nothing Party, the Prohibition Party, etc.

Agree with most of these, crossed out a few from each party. Koch Brothers are definitely my #1

Assuming "in American Politics" means currently holding or pursuing elected office (so not, for instance, John Edwards or any of the all-time worsts like Nixon, etc.), then probably Michelle Bachmann

Much better and no they aren't. Some tea Partiers (Cruz) are more hawkish in foreign policy than the Paulites (Ron and his bunch), conservatarians(Rand), and paleos (Patrick J. Buchanan).
