How it is made down south is awful. It is essentially liquid diabetes. I don't mind having a fruit flavor tea, but sweet tea here is practically syrup.

The ultimate freedom drink.  I drink it for breakfast, lunch, and dinner.  I drink it for any other snacks I have during the day.  I probably drink it a couple more times throughout the day.  I'm drinking it right now.  I drink it more than I drink water (Yeah, I know that's not the healthiest thing to do).

I don't know how they do it down South, but lightly brewed black tea (nothing remarkable, maybe even from a bag), sweetened generously but not ridiculously, left to cool over ice is a simple and refreshing drink. It's something to drink in lieu of expensive juices or God forbid, soda.

An interesting fact is that apparently until the 1940s sweet tea was mainly made with green teas. I didn't even know we consumed green teas back then.

Yeah, the idea of sweet tea is great. But the Southern version of sweet tea just tastes like syrup water.

Context for how I like my tea: I was in Pennsylvania last month - ordered unsweet tea from Chili's. Proceeded to use four condiment packs of table-sugar to make it palatable.

I don't know if this is actually a thing, but I think I'm allergic to it. If tea is anywhere near me, the fumes of it make me nauseous. Like if I walk by the drink station in a restaurant and they're refilling the tea, I have to hold my breath or I might throw up.

I don't know why this happens. And I realize it makes me lose some Southern cred (as if I ever had any).

I guess I'm opposite Walter.  I like tea (and coffee), but I don't put sugar (or milk) in either of them.  Straight up tea is good, but I'm voting horrible for the sweet tea.

I drink coffee and tea like angus, mostly, but I've had an occasional sweet tea and it's not so bad......so I'll take the 'meh' option.

Saw a plaque while I was out shopping today that said "I like my men like I like my tea: Strong, Sweet, and Southern."  If I were a gay I'd have gotten it.

Of course.  The question didn't regard the temperature at which you prefer your tea--one can reasonably assume that all folks who in cold climates prefer their tea hot, and most who live in warm climates like it hot as well--the question regarded sweeteners.  Do you sweeten your tea?

While we're at it.  They also make tea with lemon or orange or even jasmine flower built into it.  I'm not a big fan of those either, but the ones form Fujian province are tolerable.

That sounds like something one would find in Clay Aiken's kitchen.

Not sure how sweet they make it in the south, but I like quite a bit of sugar in my iced tea.

Yes, those are ludicrously expensive too, like $78/lb when I looked at it. But you are mistaken. Sweet Tea is a specific drink. And it is served cold.

Of coures I've heard of people putting ice in their tea and ice in their coffee.  I even get coupons for "Iced Coffee 99c" from Dunkin Donuts.  I've never tried it.

I'll admit to having tasted room-temperature tea and room-temperature coffee once in a while, when I get a cup and then get distracted and don't drink it all right away.  By the time I get to it the liquid is near room temperature, and I'll sometimes sip it.  Normally that doesn't happen but it does once in a while.  In that case, I'm just settling for something substandard.  I wouldn't go out of my way to make tea or coffee cold.

To each his own.  I have seen cold, sweet tea on offer at many places.  (I still contend that out of the estimated 3 billion people who drink tea regularly, the overwhelming majority of them, no matter the climate, prefer to drink it warm or hot.)  Once in a while I attend functions where I see cold, iced tea on offer.  Luckily, they always offer water as a choice in that situation, so I just have a glass of water, which I do enjoy drinking ice-cold, by the way.  No, I would not care for a wedge of lemon in my ice water.  Thank you very much.
