Apparently, things are starting to go south pretty quickly in Iraq, with insurgents reportedly preparing to attack Baghdad. The argument from the right has already become "Obama pulling out of Iraq means that everything our soldiers fought for was for nothing."

How will Iraq play into 2016?

I for one would love to see the Republican campaign on re-invading Iraq.

This is a ridiculous argument.

Hillary has had to run away from her Iraq vote for about 10 years now. If anything, this will be the issue.

I'm expecting there to be a division between the interventionist McCain types and isolationist Paul types in the primaries.

Outside of neocons, no American really gives a damn about Iraq. The GOP would have to be even more tone-deaf to try an make this a campaign issue.

If Rand runs against Hillary then it could be interesting.

The only ones that will discuss Iraq is Fox News and Bill O'Reilly who want the U.S. to do something about the 2014 Iraq developments. Yes, Americans are still upset over the long duration of the war, but in 2016 it will be slightly discussed.

Northwestern Iraq falling to ISIL is definitely bad news, but the U.S. has no core national security interest in northwestern Iraq. Imagine if Obama had made the decision the hawks now say is the best one and kept troops in Iraq. Right now, they would be fighting ISIL and dying, in a region where the Iraqi government has no support anyway. Basically they would be fighting someone else's civil war. Is that a better option? Right now our veterans are at least home (well, the ones not in Afghanistan anyway). We are out of it. I see no reason why we must be 'in it'.

This will be interesting to see. I can see it as one of the ways the establishment candidates try to differentiate from each other.

Apparently not wanting to invade a new county every week makes you an isolationist

I wasn't using the term in a derogatory manner. But he is an isolationist.

No he isn't. Calling a non-interventionist an isolationist is as absurd as calling a liberal a communist.

Hopefully it hurts those who supported the Iraq war, like Hillary.

It may affect the Democratic nominee, but Kerry won the nomination in '04 and he voted for the authorization in 2002.

And that was a big part of the reason he lost.

Pretty ridiculous that most politicians still haven't learned the lessons from that war.

One would hope the site of a genocide would be an issue.
