Sex between unmarried people inherently improper?

No, not at all.

I'm more curious as to why this became a taboo - may have had something to do with lack of reliable and efficient birth control. And also a desire for certain among those in society to control reproduction, like the priests and so forth.

The degree of sin is not relevant to this question; the question is simply whether sex between unmarried people is inherently improper.

Animals don't marry eachother, so obviously the answer is no. If the answer is yes, then all the animals who's ever lived on this planet will all go to hell.
