As a show of friendship to the now twice-defeated President Cannon, Henry Cabot Lodge decided to keep William McKinley around for a while, though that was only a token gesture towards the Angry Old Man - their public smiles concealed an enmity that was now near-irreparable, though their policies did not differ by a significant amount. The main issue dividing the two is civil rights: Lodge wants to restore the Reed Brigade to where it was under its namesake President, declaring in one speech that "the negro is as much a citizen as the white man and his rights should be protected as such." However, he's not all warm fuzzies, not at all. He wants to close Ellis Island (and by "Ellis Island" we mean "all the immigration") for an unspecified amount of time (see the political cartoon in the sidebar (Yes, I'm switching between a newspaper and a textbook on a whim, but it's my goddamn thread!)) and institute national Prohibition, and the Irish are not happy. He wants to go back to Cleveland on labor rights as well, speaking of "an end to the socialistic practice of 'collective bargaining' and the full restoration of the capitalistic economy", but y'all should know by now that that's pretty much a litmus test for any prospective Union nominee. Also he wants to maybe take over Colombia if he feels like it, or at least force the government to build a canal there or something like that.

In the purple corner are Senator Oscar Underwood and his secret lover best buddy Governor Thomas Marshall, who was picked because he "seems like a nice fellow" and has a nice mustache. Underwood is far and away the most pro-civil rights candidate in the race, having won his own Senate race in 1908 by seventeen votes, and wants to send whole platoons of federal troops down to the South in order to destroy the Klan "for all eternity"; this has earned him the ire of President Cannon, who has made rumblings of "traitorousness" and "the South shall live", which is a bit weird because the latter is from Illinois. In contrast to Lodge, he strongly opposes Prohibition (though only on states' rights grounds) and supports a constitutional amendment to institute an income tax, as well as a federal law banning child labor. He has been the only candidate in the race to speak out against eugenics (mostly at the urging of Marshall) and has threatened universities that practice it with cuts to federal funding. On the subject of Colombia, he has hinted that he is open to negotiations, but would not use military force.

BMP rising star Robert Marion La Follette is also in support of civil rights, but not nearly to the extent of Underwood or even Lodge; he would much rather see some quiet peacekeeping forces sweep into Atlanta or wherever and defuse any racial tension should it arise. He has stated his support for women's suffrage, withdrawal from Atlantis (a move which caused him to be pelted with peaches, the favorite fruit of President Donnelly, at a rally in Illinois), and increased worker protections, and although he has not said it out loud, he wants to re-nationalize the railroads if he can. He is fully in support of an amendment to allow for women's suffrage and has picked California Governor Hiram Johnson as a nod to the Rooseveltian wing of the BMP (though TR is also being courted heavily by Lodge, who has promised him the position of Secretary of War) an an attempt to win that crucial swing state.

The shiny, new Populists are here, and they're doubling down on the "we're not that racist, seriously guys" message: Carter Glass has picked rising star T. Woodrow Wilson (what an asshole - who goes by their middle name?), and their big issues are nationalization of the banks (an issue that sometimes expresses itself in rather odd ways, like Glass's foaming-at-the-mouth rant about "the money-grubbing banking cartels stealing from the mouth of real, Christian Americans") and a rather large poll tax (but, you know, not large enough to keep too many white people away from the polls). Glass has engaged in several fierce debates about eugenics with Underwood that some have called reminiscent of the Adams-Calhoun debates over slavery - in this scenario Glass is the Calhoun analogue, supporting a federally funded eugenics program for the poor and mentally ill.

Protip guys: state your VP preferences if you have them - much blood was unnecessarily spilt over Hiram Johnson yesterday.

HCL. Anyway, going out on a limb here, but I reckon this'll be a realigning election, with the Bull-Meese replacing the Farmers as the chief party of the left. Nice vote splitting going on though, very pleasing Wink

I'm seeing it more as a Whig-Radical situation, where they both have a decent claim to being the "party of the left" and merge after a while only to continue the cycle.

I smell a House vote and at least one more rocky continuation of the four-party system before that option comes up.

Lodge leads by 3 votes and 5% though, so that's iffy atm.  We can figure that out when the time comes though.

True, but I think 36% is an extremely low threshold to win outright, and then there's all the rigmarole with whoever the BMP is taking votes from.

Actually, it's not as hard to envision as you'd think in this scenario.
