Kelley was reportedly angry that the GOPers placed term limits on statewide officeholders, so he chose not to seek reelection in 1998 (when he was eligible for one final term), but decided to go out on his own terms rather than have retirement placed on him.

Wouldn't Jim Hood make the cut?  He's been Mississippi AG since January 14, 2004 - 10 years, 5 months and 4 days in office thus far.

Three of the last four AGs have been the longest serving.  Jim Mattox and Dan Morales both served 8 years.  Presumably the switch to 4-year terms led some to stay a little longer before running for governor or other office.

9 of the last eleven have run for governor or senator.  Crawford Martin died in office in 1972.  The last to simply to leave office was John Shepperd in 1957.

Morales didn't seek reelection in 1998 due to pissing off fellow Texas Democrats over Morales being staunchly anti-affirmative action, etc.,

In 2002, he ran a piss poor campaign for the governorship in the Democratic primary: getting smoked by Laredo oilman Tony Sanchez (D): 60%-33%.

Morales later went to prison for obvious reasons
