That fact and the attendant hypocrisy about it bother me vastly more than I think the concept would otherwise, really.

What's wrong with "identity"? What is this contemporary obsession with "identity" you're observing? What are you talking about?

It's not objective. We're turning existential directives into a cult-like group behavior, which isn't acceptable when political parties' primary motivation is acquiring legislative power.
