Paine has a lot to recommend him, but I don't think he qualifies as a "Founding Father" by the traditional definition.

Yep.

I think that of the Founders (if I'm going by a more literal definition) I'd probably say John Hancock.  He did after all, pardon all of the rebels who were arrested during Shay's Rebellion.  A true man of the people and a bleedingheart populist warrior who died way too soon.

I'm not sure if he qualifies exactly as a "Founding Father", but Aaron Burr was also a solid FF.  A proponent of women's suffrage, an anti-slavery advocate, a defender and advocate of the early immigrant masses in America, and the killer of Alexander Hamilton.  What isn't there to admire about him?

How could I forget John Hancock! I concur.

I'm probably most fond of Adams.

Benjamin Franklin is the only correct answer here.

Alexander Hamilton.  Not that I agree with everything he did or favored, but he certainly is the most interesting of the Founders.
