I can't say about 'moral cesspool', but I truly don't understand why the South is so resistant to advice, federal or state programs, or even private initiative, in raising the prevailingly low HDI there. Unlike any other part of the US (I'm specifically thinking about cities like Detroit and Baltimore), the South refuses to recognize the reality, and consequences, of its own mismanagement.

It gets that reputation from all of the religion and social policies that are screamed out from there. But the south and the Midwest have the nicest people who would be willing to give the shirts off their backs to help you out in a time of need. It is a pretty hypocritical area though. Can't really say it's any worse then the LA/SF area or the triangle from Philadelphi/NJ up through Boston. Very preachy in other ways and the sheer volume of assholes who are only out for themselves and who would just watch you die rather then helping is just horrible, especially with all the faux outrage they give off. Just different side of the same coin.

Humanity is a moral cesspool because we're in a fallen state from Original Sin. The Bible Belt and the South are no exception.

Obviously, though, as they have lain claim to the concept of 'morality' we should leave them to it.

The solution is to liquidate the local populations of the Great Plains and the Deep South, to turn them into the fertilizer for a stronger, hardier crop of humanity. It is mankind's destiny to breed a superman. Where better to do that than the Big Empty, full as it is of spiritual resonance?

It's no worse than anywhere else, but their brand of cultural religousity tends to breed a person that believes morality is defined by obsession with their faith rather than noble actions.
