I like Canada too much to support such a terrible idea.

Hmmm... do I want to introduce 35,000,000 hockey nuts who politically lean to the left to the American populace?

Hell yes!  Welcome the states of Ontario, Quebec, PEI, Newfoundland, Manitoba, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia, Nova Scotia, and New Brunswick!  And say hello to the new #3 sports league in America, the National Hockey League!

Agree with hockey part, disagree with the political part Wink

In all honesty, if the majority of Canadians and Americans wanted to become one, then yes, I would support it.

Yes, but I prefer the gradualist approach, uniting with Canada by increments (NAFTA is the first step) such that by the time annexation is proposed, it would be a mere formality.

Why? What makes the US+Canada (which would be larger than Russia by land area) a more geographically ideal political unit than either of them on their own?

This. Also, it would eliminate a long and porous overland border, replacing it with a maritime border covering the Pacific, Atlantic and Arctic coastlines that can be more easily patrolled by the US Navy and Coast Guard.  It would also enable us to more direct control over who comes in (and out) of Canada's ports, complementing our national security.

Canada is one of the best left-leaning nations in the world. And their conservatives are better than ours. I'd be happy to welcome them in.

Quebec would probably be the big issue, though. The territories would also be tricky, given their huge size and small population.

The Canadians must be assimilated. We will add your biological and technological distinctiveness to our own. Your culture will adapt to service us. Resistance is futile.
