I don't think anyone has ever mistaken dead0man - who qualifies for Tricare and never saw an Israeli subsidy he didn't like - for an actual libertarian.

Maybe that is the point, the quest for purity in ideology motivates that eventual evolution to the left when reality hits and hits hard.

I had some pretty strong fiscally libertarian leanings in 2005/2006, before shifting towards socialism and staying there since.

It's only reasonable that people's views on some things might evolve in their youth, and additionally I am suspicious of anyone who claims to have never changed their mind on anything.  Indeed, the phenomenon of 'libertarians turning left' has been a discussed aspect of the forum community since I joined it.

It's always fascinating how so many people just swing from a nutty worldview to another without even remotely considering the wide spectrum of rational thought that stands in between.

It's not terribly different from getting obsessed with punk rock, or chess, or Super Smash Bros. There's nothing unusual about young people who swing from subculture to subculture. Some find enough appeal within it to stick with it through entire lives, while others choose not to.

I don't know if you fall in this category and I'm certain TNF doesn't, but I've got to say I am pretty repulsed by the idea that someone would embrace an ideology because of its appeal as a "subculture". These people probably shouldn't have anything to say in politics. Politics is not fashion, music or games, it's serious stuff for [inks]'s sake. If you claim yourself to be a libertarian or a socialist because you find it "cool" and provides you with an "identity" then you're a big part of what's wrong with modern politics.

One of the quickest ways to have that sudden shift from libertarian to leftist is to be a libertarian purist, in my opinion at least. When something major happens in life and part of what you view starts to seem wrong, then the whole bubble can burst with it. But then again, I have never had such a drastic shift so I am not an expert. This is just based off what I have observed.

Is that the modern version of the Mao quote from the beginning of the Sergio Leone western Duck! You Sucker?

"The Revolution is not a social dinner, a litterary event, a drawing or an embroidery...the revolution is an act of violence by which one class overthrows another."
