I'm also kinda uncomfortable with naming some of these counties after living people.

Unless there is a born in the region rule to this, Maya Angelou grew up in Arkansas and spent a good bit of her final years in Winston-Salem.

Therefore I would ask that if practical, that either Forsyth County, North Carolina or Lafayette County, Arkansas be named after her.

Amendment is friendly.  Per the advice of our distinguished senator, I will add this amendment:

And, yes, some of these counties are named after living people.  I, personally, don't see that as a problem, but I'm open to changing the bill if the Legislature desires to.

I object to naming a county after Kenny Chesney.

I object to naming a county after Kenny Chesney.

Is it because you don't support naming counties after dead people or because you specifically don't like Kenny Chesney?

If it's the latter - HP.

Well, for one, he's not dead. And for two, if I am called an HP for not liking Kenny Chesney (who is another of a long line of modern, uninteresting country), so be it.

I do appreciate renaming Cleveland County to commemorate Johnny Cash though.

Very well, but, should we remove all the proposed name changes for people who are still alive?  A consensus from members of the Legislature would be appreciated.

With the exception of Joseph Lowery, I think that would be a good idea.

I'd be in favor of removing ALL live people on principle.

Amendment:

I alphabetized the submissions and removed the dedications to living people, with the exceptions of Lowery and Graham, which I think is a fair compromise.

Anything else, or can we get a vote started maybe by tomorrow evening?

Put Macon, AL back on the list as Parks Country in honor or Rosa Parks.

Its really clear where the emphasis was with this and wasn't on the Civil Rights part. Tongue Racists. Wink Tongue

Seeing no further debate, I bring this bill to a final vote. Legislators have 48 hours to vote aye, nay or to abstain.

With 5 Ayes this bill passes the IDS Legislature and is sent to the Emperor for signature or veto.
