Dallas, because that's the nonsensical choice. Plus, best to quarantine the GOP where they're most comfortable...

Dallas seems like a nicer city, so I'd choose that one. Still, it can get very hot there in the summer, which might be a disadvantage.

While Dallas has its advantages, it looks like the earliest they'd be able to host it there would be the week of July 18th:

http://trailblazersblog.dallasnews.com/2014/06/rnc-2016-list-could-narrow-this-morning.html/

Cleveland says they can host it there as early as June 27th.  So it may be a question of how highly the RNC values moving all the way up to early July, or even late June.

That didn't stop the Republicans from having their convention in 2012 in Tampa. Tongue

So dang it, stay out of Cleveland! Sad  Our weather is usually good in the summer, but we also get a lot of rain due to the lake effect, so if the Republicans are looking for sunny days during their convention, don't rely on us as your city! It will heavily hurt our chances at getting the DNC nomination over Columbus, Philly or Phoenix anyways.

I'm still kind of scared Cleveland will get this though because Republicans haven't held their convention in a state they ended up winning since HW Bush in 1992 in Texas which means if history repeats itself again, they might continue to go on the offensive by holding their convention in a tossup/lean Democratic state than in their own Republican territory.

If I were the GOP, I'd pick Ohio. A little convention bump could help secure the state for whoever is the candidate is, as well as Portman. I don't see much advantage of Texas - no senate races, should go into the GOP column without much effort.

Dallas, because I plan on attending and it's closer. Also, my mom grew up around Akron and if I go to Cleveland it also means visiting relatives in Canton and or Pennsylvania Tongue.

And I suppose Cleveland is going to raise $50 million for this?  It'll be Dallas.

Conventions have no impact anymore in winning a state these days.

Romney did not win FL, McCain did not win MN or made it even close, Bush did not make NY any closer, PA was won by Gore and Dole didn't win CA either ...

So, in 2016 they will likely go where the donors and the money is.

Future conventions could just as well be theme-based. Like the 2016 Democratic convention could be held in Las Vegas, to celebrate that Nevada will just have become a minority-majority state in time for the 2016 elections. Smiley 2020 could have an altogether different theme, only the imagination puts limits. The 2020 convention could for instance be held in Seattle, to celebrate that the city has obtained the highest minimum wage of any city or state in the US. Smiley All these themes should be celebratory in character of course. 2024 could be held in Miami perhaps, in order to celebrate the rising latino electorate. And maybe the 2028 convention could be held in San Francisco and celebrating two developments simultaneously; both the decades-long technology boom as well as the heightened awareness, acceptance and pride of the larger LGBTIQ community.

The 9-member Republican site-selection committee is set to make a decision as early as tomorrow and as late as July 31st with a full RNC vote expected no later than August 9th. Members of the Democratic Committee are set to visit Cleveland Aug. 4th and 5th.

There's not many hints on how they will vote, but it's a matter of whether they would rather appeal more to Hispanics, or more to African Americans, whether they would prefer a city rising in population, or a city decreasing in population, and whether they want to sit it out and have to wait to have their convention until August at latest, or get an early fundraising start by having the convention in June. To sabotage a potential Democratic location, or not to sabotage? To please Ted Cruz and Rick Perry, or to please John Kasich and Ohio's 2 Senators? To have a convention in a state they will win, or a state that they won't win, again? There's just so many questions for those 9 to ask themselves.

It's worth noting that while the Republicans most recent convention in Dallas was as recent as 1984 with Reagan/Bush, Cleveland hasn't held a Republican convention since 1936 when Republicans were more friendly to the domestic programs.

If it does end up being Cleveland, then our Democratic base here is still going to protest when the time comes. Racists aren't welcomed in Cleveland.

My prediction: Dallas for the GOP, Philadelphia for the Democrats. Conventions will be less and less about location and more about what makes most financial sense for the party and what cities are good places to fund raise. Dallas is OK for the GOP they could've done better but money talks and Philly or Columbus both would be good picks for Dems but I think Philly will ultimately win out just because of venue availability and $$.

2012 showed that convention cities don't matter a whole lot, so Dallas since it is closer.

Good for a Pawlenty, Portman or Kasich VP nomination to respect the Rust Belt.

Both bad choices, but it will be Dallas, which is even the worse of the two.
