In the context of a national budget, what significance does the transportation costs of repatriating this gold really have? It seems doubtful that the German government would reverse its previous request just to save whatever money this would've cost them.

In the context of a national budget, what significance does the transportation costs of repatriating this gold really have? It seems doubtful that the German government would reverse its previous request just to save whatever money this would've cost them.

If I remember correctly, the reason they wanted to move it to Germany, was because the German didn't trust that the banks had all the gold they claimed to have. So by pulling they would save their own gold reserve.
