I think everyone who's been playing these tournaments not called anvi has a few epic meltdowns Tongue

They'll probably be a break for the rest of you now due to the difference in calfornian and british time, but I'll message everyone if the break is too long.

And gmantis, it will likely be just a single round robin, and then we can have another tournament straight after.

Congratulations to Homely. I resigned the game after a critical error.
Quite unusual to see a knight and bishop mate and even more rarely as early as this.

Just so people know, I will be out of the country (and thus, without a reliable internet connection) for most of September. I'm sorry about whatever effect this will have on the tournament.

Franzl has beaten me, congratulations to him, I enjoyed the game.

The new table is

SPC 2
Gmantis 2
homelycooking 1
franzl 1
bore 0
Mr X 0

The new games are:
bore (W) vs Mr X (B)
franzl (W) vs gmantis (B)
SPC (W) vs homely (B)

I suggest that SPC starts the game when he feels he can commit to not timing out.

The link to my game against X is here: http://gameknot.com/chess.pl?bd=21858966&rnd=71293

Gmantis and Franzl don't seem to have started, and I'm assuming spc homely is delayed until the end of the month.

When those games do start could you leave a link in this thread so people can keep track of them?

Nice to see the FC Chess Tournaments still going.  Smiley    Good show, everyone!

I've been spending my time playing in online and over-the-board tournaments.  Been faring pretty well in the 112th GameKnot tournament, came out on top in the first three rounds with a cumulative 17 wins and 1 draw.

In other chess news, Magnus Carlsen and Vishy Anand, the two gentlemen pictured below, will face each other in a rematch of last year's world chess championship, with Carlsen defending this time, from Nov. 7-27 in Sochi, Russia.  Expecting a closer match this time than last year's confrontation.

Well, just a hunch, I guess.  I mean, it's obviously impossible to predict what will happen on the chessboard.  But Anand scored a very impressive victory in the March Candidates Tournament against the previous year's best competition, with a +3-0=11 score, and later in the summer was one of the few people to beat Carlsen in the World Rapid Chess Championship.  Carlsen has been playing in lots of tournaments, but his recent play has been uneven.  He lost two games against low 2700-rated players (170+ points below him) and the Chess Olympiad and then finished second last week at the Sinquefield Cup in St. Louis, losing one game to Fabiano Caruana, the world's new #2.  So, while I still suspect Carlsen will retain his title in November, I think Anand will give him a closer fight.

Sounds reasonable. There is likely too much Carlsen hype on the chess pages here in Scandinavia.

Anyway, when did Caruana become #2? This list has him 3 points behind Aronian.

Thanks, jdb.

That FIDE ranking list was posted before the Sinquefield Cup, which took place in St. Louis over the last two weeks.  Carlsen, Caruana, Aronian, and three other top 10-ers played in it.  Caruana won his first seven games in a row and then drew the last three to win the tournament in a walk.  His live rating is now reported to be over 2830 while Aronian's slipped to below 2800.

I don't think one can overhype Carlsen--he is truly a genius.  But, while it's easy for chess journalists to write off Anand after last year's defeat, he really is an amazingly versatile player--he has the broadest range of strengths that I've seen in almost any player.  When one is in decline as one of the best world champions in history, that means one is still pretty good.  Will be a fun match to watch.

Parody of how Magnus Carlsen plays chess.
