2012 was a pretty good Democratic year, and Casey was up for reelection in Pennsylvania, a Democratic leaning state.  However, he only beat a second tier opponent by 9 points.  With his family name and the environment, he should have won by a lot more.  If 2018 turns out to be a decent GOP year, and someone like a Dent or a Fitzpatrick or a Meehan runs, they may have a serious shot.

Also, he wasn't running against Rick Santorum in a heavy D year this time.

didn't pay attention/was complacent and I believe his opponent Smith had some self funding money to run ads, I think he assumed since the Obama campaign was running ground ops and pouring money into PA that he wouldn't have to worry about it.
