Assuming Hillary decides not to run, leaving Cuomo and a field of other mediocre candidates to fight for the nomination.  After a long bitter campaign, Cuomo narrowly comes out on top and in the weeks leading up to the convention, announces former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney as his running mate.  The Democratic ticket will now be compromised of one severely progressive Northeastern governor alongside a severely conservative Northeastern governor.

Who do the Republicans run?  Does this provoke a mass Democratic exile in the anticipation of a strong third party run?

Discuss with maps.

I think most Democrats would end up holding their nose and voting for Cuomo in a normal situation, but if he picks Romney as a VP, all bets are off.

Bush/Walker - 345
Cuomo/Romney - 141
Sanders/Kucinich - 52

Can the third party ticket be Elizabeth Warren and Jay Nixon?

For mitt Romney to agree to join the Democratic ticket would require that the GOP candidate is far too extreme for Romney and that his joining of Cuomo's ticket would be supported by other establishment figures like John McCain, the Bushes, etc.  Cuomo/Romney are able to win by attracting the votes of traditional liberals (think John Kerry) and many traditional conservatives (think John McCain).  The GOP is able to win only in the most deeply conservative parts of the country.  Meanwhile the independent ticket is able to pick up wins in a few of the most progressive states.

Democratic Ticket: Cuomo/Romney

GOP Ticket: Ted Cruz / Rand Paul

Independent Ticket: Bernie Sanders / Keith Ellison

This looks about right. Under such a scenario, assuming the GOP moved so far off the deep end I'd be voting for the Cuomo/Romney ticket.
