Even if you like neither, let's say you were forced to pick. Would you prefer McCain to have won in 2008 or Romney in 2012?

Going from what the actual 17-year-old Anton Kreitzer thought: McCain in '08.

McCain, since he would've had to deal with a heavily Democratic Congress (which would probably be even more heavily Democratic after 2010).

Romney because if McCain had been elected, we probably would have never had the votes in the Democratic Congress to override his veto on landmark pieces of legislation like the ACA, Matthew Sheperd, Lilly Ledbetter, and the economic recovery bills. At least if Romney was elected, Reid would have blocked any Romney-Boehner attempt to de-fund Obamacare and we'd still be in the Era of Obstruction anyways.

McCain, for much the same reasons I wish Reagan had won the GOP nomination and election in 1976.

McCain is less of a nutjob, so him. Even Palin is preferable to Romney.

Romney in 2012. Would have been beneficial to both the Democratic party and Hillary.

McCain is a war hero. I respect him for his service, but regarding executive capability, it's not a fair contest. Romney needed to win in 2012.

McCain. Palin putting her foot in her mouth daily would be brilliant.

I would've rather either one of them had beaten Obama.  But with hindsight, probably McCain in 2008, since it would have made it much less likely that the Tea Party movement rises and drags the GOP down.

Romney in 2012. Not because Romney is better, but because at least Obamacare would be there.

Wouldn't Hillary have been better off running in 2012 against an incumbent McCain instead of 2016 against an incumbent Romney? If McCain won, she could even wait until 2016 to run for the open seat.

Romney. I doubt he would've even repealed Obamacare.
