Does anyone do that ever (outside of Oklahoma)?

I would ask both parents, personally, regardless of age.

No, because I assume that whoever I marry (if I marry) would be an adult who can make her own independent decisions (not Oklahoman).

Once again Atlas shows how emotionally immature its users are.  How is your girlfriends relationship with her Father?  If it's a good one you don't disrespect the father if it would be culturally impaired of you to do so.  Just don't.  Besides, if you're really lucky the old man might give you a grandmothers ring for the deed.

I like how nine people so far don't give a damn if their in-laws dislike them. Smiley

Why should anyone give a damn? Love is about the two people who are in love, and nobody else.

If she specifically asked me to, sure. A lot of women are into the "traditional" marriage schtick, and this one doesn't cost a lot of money or even constitute that big of hassle. Sometimes you do silly things to make other people happy. That's a big part of what love is all about.
As it happens, one of my best female friends, dared me to ask her Dad that very question when we were in high school just as a practical joke. So, I did. It was a pretty funny moment. Teenaged girls often like to torment their fathers.

Well, just don't expect your Thanksgiving dinner guest list to be a very long one.  If that fails, just brace yourself for the worst. Tongue

I'd certainly inform the potential in-laws of the question before I pop it.

The premise is downright revolting at any adult age. Let me clarify though that there is a large difference between simply informing your future in-laws and actually asking for "permission".

If my wife had wanted me to, I would have. She tossed the idea around but ultimately decided it wasn't necessary. I was relieved.

It suggests that it's her father's permission that matters - not what she wants.

Put it this way, if parental consent were so important, I would not marry them.

No, but I would go to the parents and posthumously ask if my fiancé wanted me to.

No, because I assume that whoever I marry (if I marry) would be an adult who can make her own independent decisions (not Oklahoman).

Let's face facts here, you're not getting married.

I was in my mid-30's when I popped the question, and did exactly that beforehand. It's respect. As my father-in-law is likely going to pass any day, I'm glad I did.

Mind you, unless said father of the girlfriend gave some really good reasons to change the suitor's mind, no one should ever be actually stopped by the father's disapproval.
