Prefer debit, but have been using a credit card a lot lately to help build my credit score.

That and if there's a "security breach" I'd they'd go nuts on my credit card than clearing out my bank account.

I have a debit card that when ran as credit gives me 1% cashback, so that.

I mostly pay with cash.

I use my debit card mostly for paying at the gas station.

I use my credit card mostly for paying stuff that I order over the Internet, or for travelling.

Credit card has 3 advantages for me:

1. Enables consumption smoothing, the wet dream of any econ student.
2. Gives me better insurance and stuff for things like flight tickets.
3. If someone hijacks it or something like that it seems easier to get your money back since it has not actually been paid (it turned out quite easy the time my card did get hijacked).

Credit, mainly because there's no direct link to my bank account.

Credit is evil and allows people to be stupid.

So does debit, if you decide to go into negative territory.

Debit. It's quite popular in Canada.

Is it more popular than in other high-income countries with a modern banking system?

You can get cash back with debit. I like being able to use the local Shopper's Drug Mart as if it were my own personal ATM.

I mean when they give you x% of your spending against your account. It's a nice perk if you don't carry a balance.
