Eliminates Cleveland and probably Columbus (even though that would be interesting) for the DNC. It means we are closer to having it in Birmingham!!!

In all seriousness, I'm guessing Phoenix will now be the choice, maybe Brooklyn.

I have to think this keeps Columbus very much in the mix.

I'm really curious as to who in their right mind thought it'd be a good idea to even consider having the DNC in Birmingham, AL?

The DNC's exclusivity clause means that Cleveland is now eliminated from consideration as the host city for the DNC:

http://www.cleveland.com/open/index.ssf/2014/07/cleveland_wont_host_both_repub.html#incart_m-rpt-1

The five finalists for the DNC are now:

Birmingham
Columbus
New York City
Philadelphia
Phoenix

I think Birmingham and Phoenix are longshots.  It'll be Columbus, NYC, or Philly.

I'll be honest, this does mostly suck, but it does at least have a few benefits. On the bad news, Republicans picked our city before the Democratic committee could even come to view Cleveland out of pure sabotage. If it wasn't enough that they have perhaps one of the strongest GOP Presidential candidates in Ohio, it's also state that tilts R and now they'll have loads of money pouring into the state with all of the "enthusiasm" they're seeking in Ohio. This will mean to that Kasich will start getting national acclamation and just 4 months before his election, it can't be good for FitzGerald when Kasich will get so much outside help especially from the Koch's and Adelson for the sake of relying on him as the top pick for 2016.

For Cleveland's sake though, this will at least bring revenue into the city and with the infrastructure projects about to begin on Public Square and Quicken Loans, we might be able to finally showcase our city and stop these national lies that Cleveland is a dead heaphole. FitzGerald also deserves a lot of credit for the pick to for the amount of help him and Frank Jackson gave and one of FitzGerald's best infrastructure accomplishments, the massive county hotel which will be the epicenter of where attendees and delegates will stay. Plus, if Hillary ends up running, besides campaigning for her, it will be fun when all of us are out of school in June and the Ohio Young Democrats can protest the filthy rich outsiders every day! Cheesy

Now it will be time to see if Kasich will do his end of the Brown-Portman bargain and get the DNC in Columbus. Knowing him, he probably doesn't want Democrats surrounding the State House protesting his Tea Party agenda halfway during his second term, so X, we're relying on you! Wink

It's not official yet.  They had a poll on where to hold it, and Cleveland was the one that was most recommended (and FTR, I voted to have it there).  But at this point, I don't see how they would choose not to hold it there.

A state that's considered the quintessential bellwether, has a big union population, and went for Obama twice tilts R?

Sorry Adam, but as a Franklin County resident and tax-payer, I want the DNC held anywhere but Columbus Tongue

The same person that thought it would be a good idea having the RNC in Chicago.

It was either there or Dallas. And they couldn't have it in Dallas without awkwardly trying to figure out a way to keep George W. Bush from going anywhere near the place.

A state that's considered the quintessential bellwether, has a big union population, and went for Obama twice tilts R?

In 2000, the nation voted 48.84% for Gore, but Ohio voted 49.97% for Bush.
In 2004, the nation voted 50.73% for Bush, but Ohio voted 50.81% for him.
In 2008, the nation voted 52.86% for Obama, but Ohio voted only 51.38% for him.
In 2012, the nation voted 51.06% for Obama, but Ohio voted only 50.58% for him.

Ohio consistently over-votes Republican in every election back to 1920 (save 1972 & 1964). It definitely leans-R, which is why Republicans obsess over it so much. It's low-hanging fruit, same with Florida and North Carolina.

Back to the topic, maybe I can be in attendance. Smiley And wouldn't it be smashing if the Dems also held theirs somewhere in the Midwest? I could roadtrip with the pals to both!
Those numbers are pretty close to the national average.
