Well he was WW2 vet who went to stanford after the war was over, Vice President of  D.L. Evans Bank which was founded by his grandfather a member of the state senate during 1952- 1958 where he would be majority Leader from 57-58  the mayor of Maled Idaho his hometown from 1959-1968 where he returned to th state senate in 1968 servinf as Minority leader, he was elected lieutenant governor of idaho in 1974 he became Governor in 1977 after cecil Andrus (D) resigned to serve as Jimmy carters sec of the interior won by 19 points in 1978 election he lead Idaho during severe droughts andthe challanges of the Aryan Nations in northern idaho he helped republicans raise the sales tax 3 times to save education funding won reelection in 1982 by a narrow  margin https://uselectionatlas.org/FORUM/index.php?topic=171371.msg3697494#msg3697494 , and he ran for senate against steve symms in 1986 but lost by 12,000 votes, oh and he was the fitst and only Morman to win a governor election in Idaho, Vetoed Right to work legislation and was very bi partisan
