5.30am-2pm is a dream shift.  I'm doing 6.30am-3pm this week and it's incredible.  Frankly I'm not sure how I normally work 60 hours a week, I'm already unable to imagine a life without spare time after work.  (I'm on my 'holiday' - where I work 40-ish hours a week instead of 60.  I can only assume that if I had actual time off, I would be so directionless that I might have to finally start watching Game of Thrones from the beginning, or even worse, travel.)

A few years ago, I used to work night shifts, including a few months of just overnight (11pm-7am) shifts.  I don't think I would do that again unless I really needed to - it's just better to work in the morning and sleep in the night.

Considering that I usually go to sleep around 3-4 AM, getting to work at 5:30 AM would be extremely painful for me. If I stayed up until 5:30 now I'd probably be fine then, but I would hit a wall around 9-10 AM where I would really need to sleep.

I've worked 11pm-7am since Nov 99.  Gone through MANY co-workers on the shift.  Most people can't hack it or suffer hard through it if they can hack it.  I'm a night owl so I find it sort of easy most of the time.  The worst part, by far, is the lack of respect from my co-workers on swings and days give us for putting up with the shift most of them would quit before working.  Yeah, we sleep, yeah we take LONG lunch breaks, yeah, we don't know as much as the other shifts (because we get FAR fewer jobs), but we're (at least one of us, with the other scheduled guy on cell phone stand by) farking there at 3 am, every night.  But EVERY meeting, ever "thank you" lunch, every freaking thing happens on days or swings.  We bitch, but they don't care.
"can you schedule it at, like, 730am so it's not interupting our sleep so much?"
"no dead0, that would be rude to swing shift"
"but aren't you doing the same thing to us if you schedule it at 230pm?"
"well yeah, but you guys are used to it"

I get the same kind of thing from my family at home, with a little more understanding, but not always.

Option 1. I'm a morning person and getting off at 2pm lets you run errands during a really slow part of the day.

Option 1.  I've worked it before, albeit with an hour lunch instead of a half hour lunch.  So, I got off at 14:30.  It was nice to be able to run errands or have a good portion of the afternoon off.  The only draw back is bed time comes around 19:00 or 20:00, so you still have to DVR your favorite shows.  Still, to me, it is preferable to Option 2.

I have to get up at 5 AM or earlier for work anyway given my most recent job site, so it wouldn't be that much of a change, if the commute's only a half hour. The 2 AM quitting time would allow for me to get other things done before I have to pass out for the night, which my current job does not, so it'd be workable.

Option 1, but Option 2 could be alright for me. I prefered the night shift when I worked at Miami Subs.

I always considered something like 10-6:30 to be the worst shift because it eats up your entire day. At least if it's something like 7:00-3:30 you get the evening off. So to answer the question, I'd take the morning shift. Nothing happens in the morning while everything happens at night.

My sleep schedule is crazy as is, so I feel like the 5:30pm to 2:00am shift would fall too squarely in the middle of my day (lately I've been getting up around noon and going to bed around 4:00am... it's bad). The 5:30am to 2:00pm shift would get me on a better schedule, and front-loading the day with work would give a better uninterrupted chunk of leisure time at the end of the day.
