I noticed that Britain is planning on issuing a £5 commemorative coin next year with convicted war criminal Edith Cavell on it.  I can understand why Britain chose to misrepresent the facts of her case during the Great War for propaganda purposes, but frankly I'm stunned that they would issue a commemorative for her on the centennial of her crimes.  She actively aided Allied soldiers (as well as Belgians and Frenchmen of military age) leave occupied Belgium via the Netherlands to fight in the war.  What is truly appalling is that as someone who helped men return to fighting, she's being presented as an advocate of peace.  It is true that as a nurse, she impartially helped both injured Allied and German soldiers recuperate, but that does not excuse her extracurricular activities as an Allied agent.

I'm only 65% sure Ernest was joking.

I exaggerated my opinion somewhat.  Still, I do think she was justly dealt with once she was caught.  Her acts certainly led to the deaths of more soldiers on both the Entente and Central power sides by feeding more men into the meatgrinder of that war.  While I can see thinking her actions in funneling current and future soldiers from Belgium into the Netherlands were patriotic, I really cannot conceive how anyone thinks they were peaceful.
