Yes, because then people will start to care about improving public schools instead of just yelling "VOUCHERS!" and running away from the problem.

That's like (warning hyperbole) suggesting murdering all politicians and lawyers so that people will find their own solutions to their problems.

I had never heard of the idea of banning private schools before I came to this site. Utterly ridiculous.

I need to look into this some more, but somehow the city of Tupelo, Mississippi managed to effectively ban private schools from 1970ish to 2012.

My opinion on the matter is that, in a perfect world, the public education system would be robust enough as to erase the demand for private education.  Ideally, government would ban private schools - the state has a responsibility and a duty to educate and socialize its future citizens.  However, I don't think this is going to fly anytime soon in the U.S. so I'm not going to get upset about it.

Private schools are perfectly fine. Don't feed into the madness that they are hurting the public school system. Public schools are essential (which is why I am strongly opposed to the voucher system), but if someone wants their kids to go to a private school because they think that he/she can get a better education, so be it. The government is here to give a free option, not to ban private institutions. If the public schools are good enough, eventually the private schools will naturally be phased out.
