Interesting. It seems he's taking a more progressive approach to the issue.

You know, this is about as Profiles In Courage as it gets for someone I always assumed to be a fairly conventional weathervane politician.

The law and order emphasis on this issue has become dominant to a surprising degree, so voicing this is an important balance.  We can't send children back to death, but also we can't encourage children to risk death trying to get here. It's an incredibly difficult problem.

I don't see how this is a toxic opinion and fatal for a politician to express. There's a good argument for letting the kids stay instead of rounding them up and sending them back to their deaths.

I don't see this ending his potential campaign, but his statement will be mentioned numerous times in the primary.

This will strenghten him in the Democratic primary for sure. Whether it would strenghten or weaken him in the general election is as of yet unclear. It would probably strenghten him with the crucial latino voters though, including those latino voters in states such as Florida, Arizona and Colorado. With non-latino voters it would probably not matter all that much either way, only on the margins...

Could this be O'Malley's niche? If no minority politicos run against the Hilary, he maybe could rile up the Latinos in the base through immigration. (By "maybe could ", I of course mean "almost certainly could  not")

(People opposing this probably haven't voted Democrat in a while anyway)

The failed Maryland Health Exchange already killed O'Malley's national ambitions as President or VP this does not matter at all.

So apparently the Obama people were a bit annoyed by O'Malley's comments, and he made it worse when he said that he didn't want the kids to come to a facility in Maryland…..because it's in a conservative part of the state, where they might be harassed(!):

That article by Politico seems pretty misleading.  Both the title and the opening sentence of the article insinuate that O'Malley is opposed to the children being sent to  his state and is, therefore, a hypocrite.  There are serious, legitimate concerns about the use of this facility, which the Politico article fails to mention.  The facility has already been vandalized with an anti-immigrant message. Also, the local governments  have vehemently opposed the potential use of the facility by the children and have pledged not to provide any assistance to the federal government if they moved the children to the facility.  O'Malley would have no reason to object to the use of this facility, which looks bad politically, unless the use of the facility could result in potential danger for the children, which would look even worse politically.  O'Malley has a strong record (whether you like it or not) of protecting undocumented immigrants within the state from deportation and providing them with various state benefits.  At this point, it is important for O'Malley to find another, more suitable, if he wants to save some face politically.

In world where there are no unintended consequences of course, but in reality, difficult decisions come with high rank.

Sending them back could kill them, but keeping them could lure twice as many to die in the deserts in the attempt to attain the same treatment. That is the paradox that those who are prone to err on the side of compassion, or what seems to be on surface, inevitably fail to consider.

This man is not suited to be President, but of course, we already knew that three years ago in the storms and last year with the exchange.

O'Malley accuses the White House of spinning his comments:

In other O'Malley news, he's come out against the Redskins name:

Interesting. It seems he's taking a more progressive approach to the issue.

Because it's literally the only way for him to stand out at all.
