Lately, Democrats' strategy is to target states with a lot of electoral votes by running up the margins with urban voters and minorities. While this is a great strategy to win the presidency, it doesn't help with winning and keeping the senate.

And of cause winning governorships also help by making a respectable bench of candidates.

Shouldn't the Democrats try to win the rural votes in elastic states (specifically Alaska and North Dakota) to help keep the senate?

(Yes, I know about Mark Begich and Heidi Heitkamp, but they are the exceptions not the rule.)

Yeah, I agree that it's really important for Dems to make some effort in states like these, if only for the Senate seats.
