Italy squeak by Malta. Malta played most of the match down a man but Bonucci had to be a dumbass and yank down a Malta player because he didn't feel like running. He was the last man and prevented a goal scoring opportunity so he was sent off late in the match. Croatia romped to victory so they're technically top of the group on goal difference. We play them in our next qualifier and, quite frankly, we should be worried. It was always going to be a massive match especially since they are always tough for us (I think we've only beaten them once). Now our backs are really against the wall.

In other news, the Dutch lost and are six (!) points out of the top two.

It would be classic Italy for y'all to squeak into the Euros through the third place playoff and then win the tournament.

I take solace in the fact that we still have more points than the goddamn Dutch.

Italy would get chewed up and spit out if they were in Germany's group, sorry to say Phil.

1) Uh, no.

2) We'd still beat Germany so you'd be...what...fifth in the group?

3) Too bad for all of our haters that we aren't in that group.

A Ronaldo header in the 95th (!) minute have Portugal a desperately needed win in that Group of Disaster.

Serbia-Albania game was cancelled for skirmishes between fans.

There was a bit more to it than that...

Some Albanian nationalist(s) somehow flew a drone over the pitch carrying a Greater Albania flag.  A Serbian player grabbed the flag and tried to bring down the drone, and then scuffles broke out among the players, which then developed into a riot involving the Serbian fans (Albania had no tickets for the match, so there were essentially no away fans) with some of the fans attacking the Albanian players.

Pictures here.

Some people are apparently suggesting that this fixture should join Armenia-Azerbaijan and Spain-Gibraltar as one to be deliberately avoided in draws.

Apparently, the brother of the Albanian Prime Minister piloted the drone onto the pitch from the VIP lounge ... Tongue

A one-goal win against the total football superpower of Malta is not too impressive either. ;-)

And you'll never see me thinking it's acceptable but it's pretty typical for us. Wink

German media already started to panick a bit about this, asking if this could be the first time since 1968 Germany doesn't qualify for a European championship. Tongue

I'd actually hate that but I love watching them sweat.

Unfortunately, the expansion to 24 teams has rendered unlikely the prospect of ever seeing a traditional power miss out on the competition again.

No shocker: Del Bosque states that he'll be leaving as coach of Spain after the Euros.

He really should have stepped down three months ago.

Tomorrow, we need to beat Russia here at home in Vienna.

Not easy at all without David Alaba, who suffered a knee injury not long ago.

My prediction: 1-1 (but maybe Russia wins, who knows)

If we in fact manage to beat Russia, it would be a good step for qualification.

So, Austria vs. Russia starts now.

LOL @ how about 90% of the stadium audience still sings "homeland of great sons you are" instead of the gender-neutral version ("homeland of great daughters & sons you are") that parliament passed as the official national anthem 2 years ago.

1st half over and it's 0-0.

Both we and Russia had good chances, Russia is slightly more active though.

Wouldn't rule out a Russia win, but a draw would be nice.
