If Jimmy Carter came back and picked someone like Warner as his vice-president, what chances would he stand?

He'd have a better chance of being elected in 2016 than Romney does, at least.

Uh, no he wouldn't.

Carter would lose in a landslide to any sane Republican because most people regard his presidency as a failure, even though I personally think Carter was a great president.

Leaving assessments of his presidency aside, considering that Carter unfortunately carries the risk of not living through a full term due to his age (89), I don't think that he would fare so well with most voters, who probably wouldn't want to run the risk of having the president die in office.

Carter is just a few months shy of George HW Bush's so like Never said he's way too old.  Plus, as RR1997 said, his administration was a failure (although not quite as bad as Obama).

I'd vote for Carter over half of the GOP field.

Here's a purely hypothetical map of this:

√ James Earl Carter (D-GA) / Mark Warner (D-VA) EV=451
Sarah Palin (R-AK) / Ted Cruz (R-TX) EV=87

This model assumes that Carter runs a spectacular campaign which rebuilds his popularity and allows him to preserve Obama's coalition in tact while still winning over at least 30% of the (rural) Southern White vote. This is realistic considering his performance in '76 and '80. This model also assumes that he goes up against a particularly weak opposition, such as Palin/Cruz, which runs a disastrous gaffe-prone campaign, as only Palin/Cruz can do. Any Thoughts?

This could happen. I'm not really sure about your map (would Palin really win CO/AZ?), but I agree with your reasoning for a Carter/Warner victory.

I suspect that in the back of the voters' minds, they would think Palin versus Warner while voting (since he would probably become president at some point between 2017-2021 should Carter/Warner win, since Carter might very well pass on during his term). Using that line of thinking, Warner wins hands down. I would vote for either Democrat on the ticket over putting Palin and Cruz in place as our nation's leaders, and I suspect a massive majority of Americans would do the same.

Absolutely no chance. He is too old, has too clear of a record to examine, and is seen as a President of the past. He's a good guy and all, but he wouldn't win.

If we could invent a reverse-aging machine, put Carter in it, and turn him 65 again, I would vote for him in a fraction of a heartbeat.

So long as Mondale has a place in his prospective cabinet, I would support the once and future President Carter.
