1789-1804: Federalist
1804-1820: Independent
1820-1828: Democratic-Republican
1828-1833: National Republican
1833-1854: Whig
1854-present: Republican

Factions
1824-1828: Pro-Adams
1833-1854: Conscience Whig
1854-1877: Radical Republican
1877-1900: Half Breed Republican
1900-1980: Moderate Republican
1980-present: Neoconservative Republican

I'm probably one of the few people here who would always be a Democrat Republican.

Well I was a extreme tea party conservative republican (was dem initially with those views) than after seeing the abuse of large corporations and the hypocrisy of the tea party movement I became a independent and adopted my own views (drawing from the left and the right). Idk about past elections because I was not alive then.

Can someone explain the views of parties like democrat-republican and federalist.

1788-1804: Federalist
1804-1824: Republican
1824-1828: Jacksonian
1828-1848: Democratic
1848-1854: Independent
1854-1884: GOP
1884-1892: Independent
1892-1896: Populist

With hindsight
1896-Present: Democratic  (5 Swings: 2 against Wilson the Warmonger, 1 against Davis the Racist, 2 against Stevenson the Elitist)

Without hindsight
1896-1904: Democratic
1904-1912: GOP (Swept up by the TR cult and short-sighted anger at the nomination of Alton B. Parker, followed by naively assuming Taft would be a third TR term)
1912-1916: Progressive (I'd go this way simply because of the TR personality cult, even though most Northern Democrats were effectively everything TR wanted already, and with the bonus of no warmongering)
1916-1928: GOP (One swing: 1 against Coolidge, the other 3 votes I would fall for the buzzwords against Wilson and fail to see the emptiness of Hughes or failures of Harding, when Cox was easily a better choice)
1928-Present:  Democratic   (Two swings: Both against Stevenson)

As for the Wings

Hamiltonian Feds (Not Adams)

Madison Republicans (Because Jefferson was disgustingly libertarian)

Van Buren Democrats (And the Van Buren crowd liked Jackson's populism, but not his pro-slavery. However the populist stand makes a better argument against slavery in the first place)

Anything anti-slavery as an independent

Radical GOP

Mugwumped to no party again

Populists

Anti-Imperialist Democrats

Now without hindsight

Progressive GOP (1904-1928) [The Progressive wing as we know took a break between 1912-1916 and 1924-1928]

Moderate Democrats (1928-1970)
New South Democrats (1972-1984)
New Democrats (1984-Present)

With hindsight

Anti-imperialist Democrats (1896-1908)
Liberal Democrats (1908-1914)
Anti-war Democrats (1914-1920)
Liberal Democrats (1920-1932)
Moderate Democrats (1932-1948)
Civil Rights Democrats (1948-1968)
Moderate Democrats (1968-1992)
Progressive Democrats (1992-Present) [Because DLC is a disaster]

I would have been born in the Civil War and somehow lived up to today, but here goes:

Solidly Republican, strongly pro-Lincoln, from Pennsylvania

Loved Teddy Roosevelt in the 1900s (decade) and backed him as the Progressive in 1912, but likely remained registered as Republican

I would have voted for FDR in 1932, despite continuing to be a Republican (but a progressive one).

I would have favored the defense of the Allies and intervention in World War II, and maybe in the 1940s begun to drift away from the Republican Party.

In the 50s, I would have voted for Eisenhower, but possibly supported a Democrat for statewide or local offices in PA.

By 1960, I would be torn between the two parties, I would have gone with JFK, then with Johnson in 1964.

I think by the late 60s, early 70s I would have sympathized greatly with the antiwar movement, with the women's movement, with the gay movement, and become too progressive to remain a Republican.  I may have kept it as the party registration for me to vote in R primaries, but supported the Democrat in the general election.

I think I may have voted for Ross Perot in 1992.

Well, you know what they say: "Government can only transfer money by way of a leaky bucket."

1796-1828 Democratic-Republican Party (Not sure about 1796)
1828-1854: Democratic Party*
1854-1892: Republican Party**
1892-1896: Populist
1896-1917: Democrat (Except for 1912 when I might've registered as a Progressive
1917-1933: Republican (I'm not sure if I would've registered as a Progressive in 1924 but I doubt I would've changed my registration even if I supported Harry Wallace in 1948).
1933-2020: Democrat
2020-: Republican (Currently registered as an Independent so I can vote in the Dem primary if I feel like it but for ideological sake I consider myself to be a Republican).

Astriks:
*While I could see myself supporting the American model economically, their opposition to expanding democracy and pro-elitist views would've made them unappealing.

**While I still would've supported Jeffersonian/Jacksonian democracy at that time, my abolitionist and pro-tariff views would've made me an outcast within the Dem party during the 3rd party system, although I might've voted for either the Greenbacks or Democrats depending on the nominee.

1789-1800: Federalist
1800-1824: Jeffersonian Democrat
1824-1848: Jacksonian Democrat
1848-1854: Free Soil Party (although I could see myself supporting Winfield Scott in 1852)
1854-Present: Republican Party (with the except of a few elections)

Assuming I avoid saying "independent" at any point, since that's kind of a cop out answer it would probably be something like:

1789-1800: Federalist
1800-1824: Democratic-Republican
1824-1848: Democratic
1848-1854: Free Soil Party
1854-1930s: Republican
1930s-1950s: Democratic (The great depression and WWII would probably shift me towards the Democrats, but the Cold War era would most likely shift me back towards the Republicans at some point)
1950s-2016: Republican (Not in every election, and there are certainly issues I would agree more with Democrats on, but ultimately there is usually something that would keep me in the Republican coalition)
2016-now: Democratic (Even though I'm far from being consistently left-leaning l, the issues that Republicans are most focused on are ones that I strongly disagree with them on. Along with this, Trump, the party's reaction to him, and the way they have been acting since the 2020 election makes me distrust the Republican Party as an institution at this point.)

Federalist Party over DIXIECRAT thru 1920, 1920 until now Labor Party over Tories when Cox ran with FDR, FDR changed the DIXIECRAT party to Labor Party being from NY, Bryan Jennings and WILSON we're still DIXIECRAT and so was Grover Cleveland

DIXIECRAT like Thomas Jefferson would not be pro Apartheid as they were before in today's standards when Edwards ran with John Kerry but Kerry picked the wrong Populist GEPHARDT should of been picked it would be the DLC D party

The Federalist party were the Chris Shays, Judd Greg Carly Fiorina party and only after Nixon got elected with whites backlash to Civil Rights and Jay E Hoover did the Southern strategy come into Play
