This is something I've been thinking about for a while, and it really irritates and confuses me.  Do any of you have some ideas about the differences between a moderate Republican and a moderate Democrat?  I hear those terms get bandied about by our lazy, propaganda-driven media so much that I don't know what they really mean.

Imo, moderate Democrats are closet Republicans, and moderate Republicans are closet Democrats. Neither faction switches affiliation due to cultural barriers of some kind.

Moderate republicans don't exist, so that's the main difference.

Moderate democrats. Because they're moderate/conservative on social issues. On economic issues, they fully back their party (or mostly at least).

Yeah, 'moderation' on sociocultural wedge issues is the only kind that's really acceptable any more, with a few exceptions.

"Traditional" moderate Republicans tend to be more driven by money than religion, and as such place very low emphasis on social issues. Once elected to the U.S. House or Senate, of course, their party whips them into supporting the party line more often than not. Increasingly conservative leadership has been aggressively suppressing their ability to offer compromise or their own moderate bills. Dissension is allowed only when votes aren't absolutely needed for passage, but that's really nothing new.

Sure they do; they just haven't had much success winning elections recently.

Actually Lowell Weicker and Lincoln Chaffee both got elected governor after they stopped being Republicans.
