Funny that the Western media has pasted the capture of one of their guys as the top story while burying the continued mass civilian casualties under it.

Funny that certain people to overlook how 1,700 people have died in Syria in the past week. Like many murders in this country, killings of the dispossessed only seem to arouse their attention when "privileged" groups are doing the killing.

Media attention has been given to the missing soldier because of its immediate consequences (i.e. end of a three day truce almost as soon as it started) and because of its potential consequences. Israeli attitudes towards the capture of its soldiers are unusual.

1. There is, as you mentioned, an enormous power disparity between Israel and Gaza; one side is almost entirely killing soldiers while the other is primarily killing civilians; Assad and the rebels (who are now almost entirely Islamists; the moderates we were backing are more or less dead) have been slaughtering each other as well as many civilians. And in Israel, human interest stories like cats and owls that were hit by rockets get more traffic than articles about the slaughter in Gaza.

2. The Syrian conflict is an internal one (unless you lump it in with the Iraqi violence, which you probably should); this is an aggressive war between two states.

3. The lack of reporting on Syria is because the media has stopped trying to drum up a US intervention there on behalf of the rebels as they were last fall; if anything, the US is tacitly supporting Assad now by the proposed strikes on ISIS targets.

The reason Hamas is not killing civilians is not for lack of trying. There would probably still be suicide bombings every other day of not for the wall and the blockade. Lets not forget their crappy rockets either.

The supposedly captured Israeli soldier was apparently not captured at all, but killed in action on Friday.

Israel now says that the soldier was in fact killed.

From what I understand Israel would rather not have a live captured soldier, so they may have purposefully killed him.

It should be noted that it's an online newspaper with an open blog platform so it is more like one guy being a bit mental. Not THAT reflective of anything.

Yeah, It's fairly equivalent to the psychotic choads who post on Red State's blogs. Some horrific things there too.

Sounds like the "Comment is Free" section on the Guardian site.

If the objective for Israel is to eliminate not only the tunnels but also to prevent new ones from being built (which is the only way this operation makes sense to me), then the re-occupation (and perhaps resettlement) of Gaza is perhaps inevitable, denials to the contrary notwithstanding.

Reminder that Israel is also murdering Palestinian civilians in the West Bank right now: http://www.hrw.org/news/2014/08/03/israel-shooting-deaths-after-west-bank-protest-0

The fighting continues, but the IDF appears to be withdrawing or mostly withdrawing.

One could try a nuanced response to your s**t, but why bother with rampant anti-semitism? Instead: given Hamas' clear intention is to drive the only Jewish state in the world 'into the sea' - f**k it, turnabout's fair play and all that.

No it isn't. That's what they want - to bait Israel into actually sinking to the level of their enemies. As it hasn't, they just make sh**t up and accuse it of genocide anyway. But every case where even a single random person calls for Israeli genocide is YEARS of ammunition for our enemies.

We need to police our own radicals. They're a far bigger danger to us than they are to the people they actually advocate against.

Seeing that a important pro-Israel talking point are that Palestinians don't even exist and how often driving the Palestinians over the river Jordan and/or into the Sinai desert, I don't think that the pro-Israel side have the moral high ground on that point.

State Department tells Israel to stop attacking schools.

Pretty strong language, though regrettably just that.

Well at least in diplo-speak we know this is the equivalent of "F**k off."

UN secretary-general Ban Ki-moon went so far to call the school shelling "a moral outrage and a criminal act."

It's worth noting that they never actually mention Israel by name. It's as if there's a ghost lurking in Gaza making shells spontaneously explode in schools.
