Which state are you thinking of when someone asks you about a typically Republican state?

Utah. Prat of me wants to say a deep south state, but racial demographics makes Utah a better fit IMO.

Yes, the South has a too Democratic background to call it "characteristically Republican".

Rural and suburban, white, and Evangelical are big factors.

I might just go with Oklahoma.

Oklahoma, if not Kansas.

Part southern and part plains make Oklahoma a good generic example, plus its one of the most republican states. Texas could also be a suggestion.

Oklahoma and Kansas are good examples. Texas has to many Democratic areas.

Actually, Oklahoma is better fit than Utah. Somehow I just completely forget that it existed. Tongue

Tried to go with the state that first came to mind for this.

Texas won, of course.

Good call here. It also just had a Senate battle between two fairly right-wing Senate candidates, with the more establishment candidate narrowly defeating the more Tea Party-leaning candidate. This seems like a good reflection of the GOP nationwide, at least at the moment.

The book What's the Matter with Kansas illustrated why it is quintessentially GOP, even when there are segments of the population that may have good reasons to vote Dem.

Kansas or Utah.  No matter how much Oklahoma hates Obama, it has historically been more Democratic, and it still has too many registered Democrats.

When I imagine Republican hotbeds I see miles upon miles of exurban sprawl.  So, I'm inclined to say Arizona, Texas or Georgia.

South Carolina. Southern state and has strong elements of both the establishment and Tea Party wings of the GOP.

Definately Mississippi. The Plains states are missing the racial tension, spite, and overall backwardness of the GOP.
